What is Pulsed Light?
Pulsed Light has been used commercially for a variety of cosmetic procedures for
the last 2 or 3 years. It is light energy, just like a laser, but it is not a
concentrated beam and it uses a wider range of the light spectrum.
Lasers, used in other industries, were adapted for cosmetic procedures about 10
years ago. However, they are much more powerful than most of these procedures
require and they consist of a single wavelength which limits their ability to
achieve the desired results across many skin types. More recently, manufacturers
realized that a wider range of light frequency dispersed over a wider area of
the skin was more effective and did not generate the painful experience suffered
with the use of lasers. A Pulsed Light machine generates a flash of light
similar to a camera flashbulb. The light applicator is placed on the skin and
the light is flashed. The light frequency and energy level are set so that the
light photons penetrate the surface of the skin and reach hair follicles, excess
skin pigmentation or bacteria (in the case of acne treatments) below the
surface. The Pulsed Light energy, depending on setting used by the technician,
kills hair, removes concentrations of melanin (age spots & sun damage) or
kills bacteria. It can also be set to force the body to generate collagen
immediately under the treated area. This gives the skin a smoother, cleaner
appearance.

How does Pulsed Light hair
removal work?
The innovative Pulsed Light technology is based on the principle of selective
photothermolysis, in which light is selectively absorbed in the hair shaft and
hair follicle, without damaging the surrounding skin. The hair follicles contain more pigment
(melanin) than the surrounding skin tissue. Therefore they absorb more light,
which creates heat to
the point of coagulation. This means that the tiny, vascular tissue at the base
of the hair follicle which feeds and supports the hair is damaged sufficiently
such that it stops working and the hair dies.
How is Pulsed Light hair
removal different from the laser hair removal I have heard about?
Both laser systems and Pulsed Light emit a quick burst of light energy that is
readily absorbed by the hair follicle. The hair absorbs the light, the energy from the light
is transformed into heat and the heat damages the tiny vascular tissue that
feeds and supports the hair. When this happens, the tissue stops working,
the hair dies and falls out and it can't re-grow. This principle is the
same for both lasers and pulsed light systems. Physicists define a "laser"
as a light source that consists of a single wavelength of coherent light.
Intense Pulsed Light systems use a multi-wavelength light form that consists of
non-coherent light. Some of the benefits of this kind of light energy
include more a more comfortable treatment for the client and the ability to
complete a treatment more quickly.
What does the treatment
include?
The hair to be treated will be trimmed or shaved. The handpiece will be pressed
lightly on the treatment area. Then, a pulsed-light will be delivered. Each
pulse covers an area of about 1" x 2 1/2". This is a large area (the largest
spot size on the market) and therefore the treatment is fast and effective for
large body areas such as legs and arms.
What kind of results can I
expect to see from a treatment?
Pulsed Light hair removal offers the long-lasting results you can expect from a
leading high-tech hair removal device. Mild redness may occur immediately after
treatment, but this usually disappears within the first 24 hours. Otherwise,
there is minimal discomfort and no side effects. To achieve optimal results,
several treatments are generally needed, with the exact number treatments
varying from client to client. If the client has a reasonably favorable
profile (good contrast between skin and hair color), they should expect to see
the majority of the hair in the treatment area removed in 4 to 6 treatments.
Why does a client need to
have several treatments?
Hair growth occurs in a three-part growth cycle: active, dormant, and
transitional. Only in the active growing phase is the hair shaft connected
directly to the tissue that is being targeted by the light energy. Because
the hair shaft is the conduit for the light energy, only the hair that is
actively growing is eliminated at the time of treatment. That could be
between 5% - 25% of the hair in the treatment area at any given moment in time.
When you return for the next treatment 6 to 8 weeks later, other hair in the
treatment area has moved into an active growing phase and so it is eliminated.
This is an incremental process where some hair is removed at each treatment.
The intervals between treatments correspond to the body's natural hair growth
cycle so there is really no way to efficiently accelerate the schedule of
treatments.
What areas of the body can
be treated?
Virtually any body area can be treated. The Pulsed Light system should not be
used for shaping eyebrows because the detail required by most customers is too
fine for the equipment to achieve. However, the area between the eyebrows can be
treated as well as any other part of the body. Pulsed Light hair removal systems
use large spots sizes, enabling quick treatment of even the largest body areas.
Who is a candidate for
treatment?
The Pulsed Light hair removal system allows safe treatment of all skin types and
most hair colors. Different skin types and hair colors simply require different
energy settings. To determine your skin type
click
here. People with certain conditions cannot be treated. For example,
we will not treat anyone that is pregnant.
Does it hurt?
The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her
sensitivity. The sensation may be anything from painless to tolerable sting.
Many clients describe the sensation as a slight tingling, like that of being
snapped with a rubber band. Anesthetic creams may be applied if the client
desires.
How long does a treatment
take?
A treatment session typically takes between several minutes up to an hour for
very large body areas. The total number of sessions needed depends on the size
of the area to be treated, the thickness of the hair growth and your skin type.
As an example, the treatment on a woman's bikini line or underarms takes about
5 minutes and usually requires about 5 visits - 1 visit every 6 weeks. The
treatment for a man's back takes about 45 minutes and usually requires 7-9
visits, 1 visit every 7 or 8 weeks.
Are there any side
effects?
The treated area may become slightly pink or red immediately after treatment.
This may last a few hours. Clients can continue with their daily routine
immediately after treatment.
How often will I need to
repeat the treatment series?
Pulsed Light, like other light-based hair removal technologies, results in
significant long-term hair removal. However, the rate at which new hair follicle
growth will result varies from person to person and from body part to body part.
What are the advantages of
the Pulsed Light hair removal treatment?
The treatment provides all advantages of light-based hair removal treatment at
an affordable price. After the treatment there is a significant reduction in the
amount of hair. The few hairs that grow back come in slower, lighter and
thinner. In addition, the exceptionally large spot size results in quicker
treatment time.
How many treatments will
be needed?
The number of treatments required to obtain optimal results varies with hair
density, hair color, skin types, the treatment area and your hair growth cycle.
The density of your hair and its growth cycle are affected by many things such
as your age, ethnic background, hormones or medications. Pulsed Light treatments
impair the growth capacity of hair follicles when they are in a growth cycle at
the time of treatment. All hair follicles are not active at the same time. All
hair follicles are not active at the same time. Depending upon the growth cycle
of the follicles when the treatment is applied, several treatments with a few
weeks in between may be required to obtain the desired effect.
Is there anything I should
do or not do prior to the treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use at least 4
weeks prior to the treatment. Don't wax for a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the
treatment. Generally, for both men and women, shave 1 or 2 days (not the day of) before your
treatment.
Is there anything I should
do or not do following the treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use. We further
recommend you use sunscreen following the treatment. Waxing between treatments
is not recommended, but shaving is fine. You should avoid exposure to the sun
and tanning beds for 4 weeks after treatment.
Can Pulse Light
successfully treat all skin colors?
Pulsed Light can treat all skin colors except the very darkest. We do, however,
expect to have new equipment in the near future that treats even the darkest
skin types.

How does Pulsed Light skin rejuvenation work?
The innovative Pulsed Light technology is based on the principle of selective
photothermolysis, in which light is selectively absorbed in the cells of the
abnormally pigmented skin, without damaging the surrounding skin. Age spots, sun
damage and vascular problems like rosacea and spider veins absorb the light
energy at a much higher rate than the surrounding tissue. The light energy
changes to heat and destroys the heavily pigmented cells or the darker vascular
tissue. The body naturally expels these dead cells hours or days after the
treatment.
How is Pulsed Light skin rejuvenation different from other
rejuvenation procedures?
Pulsed Light treatments are characterized by speed and convenience. Other
options like laser resurfacing or microdermabrasion are invasive, i.e. they
actually remove one or more layers of the epidermis (the outside skin). As a
result, treatments take longer and the client frequently has a recovery period
during which the skin is red and sensitive. Pulsed light is non-ablative (i.e.
it doesn't cut into your skin). It only attacks the highly pigmented areas
that most clients want to remove. Also, after several treatments the client may
notice that the skin in the treatment area looks smoother and fuller. This is
because the light energy penetrates the dermis (the lower level skin tissue) and
forces the body to produce more collagen than it would otherwise. This fills out
the skin, particularly in older people, and makes the skin look smoother.
What does the treatment include?
The skin to be treated will be trimmed or shaved as necessary. The hand-piece
will be pressed lightly on the treatment area. Then, a pulsed-light will be
delivered. The technician will move the applicator across the skin flashing each part of the treatment
area. In most cases, depending on the specific skin problem being addressed, the
technician will go back over the treatment area a second time the same way.
What kind of results can I expect to see from a treatment?
In most cases the client will see highly pigmented areas start to fade slightly
after the first treatment. Mild redness of the skin within the treatment area
may occur immediately after treatment, but this usually disappears within a few
hours. In cases of rosacea or spider veins, the client will usually see some
reduction in the vascular inflammation (redness) within a day of the treatment.
Otherwise, there is minimal discomfort and no side effects. To achieve optimal
results, several treatments are generally needed, with the exact number
treatments varying from client to client and also depending on the kind of skin
anomaly that is being corrected.
Why does a client need to have several treatments?
Light energy is absorbed by cells under the skin's surface and, in many cases,
it kills the highly pigmented cells. At the same time, it does not generate
enough energy to harm surrounding cells. Using enough energy to ensure the
destruction of ALL the undesirable cells would not be healthy for the
surrounding tissue. In addition, the body needs time to expel dead cells and
move others closer to the surface - something that happens as concentrations
of highly pigmented cell structures are destroyed. So, this is a gradual process
where some number of the undesirable cells are removed while the surrounding
tissue adjusts, recovers and consolidates itself around the remaining
undesirable cells. With additional treatments more of the undesirable cells are
killed and expelled and this process continues through 4 or 5 treatments which
removes the vast majority of the cellular structures that the client doesn't
want.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Virtually any body area can be treated except eyelids.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
The Pulsed Light skin rejuvenation system allows safe treatment of most skin
types. It is particularly effective with people over 30 that have noticeable
signs of aging including age spots on the hands, face, shoulders and upper chest
(common areas for sun exposure). For people of any age that have visible
vascular problems like rosacea or spider veins, this is an excellent
dramatically reduce or eliminate the redness associated with these conditions.
Generally, we will not treat people currently taking antibiotics, anyone that
has recently had a similar procedure (e.g. microdermabrasion) within the last
few days, anyone that's pregnant or anyone taking drugs that enhances
photosensitivity.
Does it hurt?
The degree of discomfort varies with each person, depending on his/her
sensitivity. The sensation may be anything from painless to tolerable sting.
Many clients describe the sensation as a slight tingling, like that of being
snapped with a rubber band. Anesthetic creams may be applied if the client
desires, but they are rarely needed.
How long does a treatment take?
A treatment session typically takes between 10 and 45 minutes depending on the
size of the body part being treated. The technician will evaluate your skin type
and the kind of skin condition you want to correct and determine whether 1, 2 or
3 passes of the pulsed light applicator is needed during the treatment session.
Are there any side effects?
The treated area may become slightly pink or red immediately after treatment.
This may last a few hours. Some people notice that highly pigmented areas (like
freckles and age spots) appear darker or seem slightly raised off the surface of
the skin. This is only temporary. Usually within a few days the pigmented areas
should look lighter than they did prior to treatment. Clients can continue with
their daily routine immediately after treatment.
How often will I need to repeat the treatment series?
This depends on a number of factors starting with the skin abnormality that is
being corrected. In the case of age spots and sun damage, the need to repeat the
procedure after a series of treatments has been completed is highly dependent on
additional exposure to the sun. If the client has seen a significant improvement
in the skin pigmentation following a series of treatments, including the removal
of highly pigmented areas, extended exposure to the sun will reverse the process
and often the spots will return. This can be avoided by using good quality
sun-screen when going outdoors for extended periods. Clients treating rosacea
and other vascular conditions must recognize that the medical community is not
sure what causes these conditions. Because the cause of conditions, like rosacea,
are not completely understood and because environmental factors (e.g. diet, sun
exposure, etc.) are thought to play a part in some cases, it is not realistic to
suggest that any treatment is permanent. However, based on trials documenting
the results of pulsed light on these vascular conditions, symptoms are
significantly reduced or completely eliminated for months or years depending on
the individual and their lifestyle.
What are the advantages of the Pulsed Light skin rejuvenation
treatment?
Besides the obvious changes to the client's appearance, Pulsed Light provides
a fast, convenient and affordable way to treat skin conditions that have been
difficult to treat with other, older methods.
How many treatments will be needed?
The number of treatments required to obtain optimal results varies with the kind
of skin condition that the client wants to correct. It also varies based on the
skin type of each client. Most clients see changes after the first treatment and
some are satisfied after 2 treatments. However, most clients achieve their
desired results after 4 or 5 treatments.
Is there anything I should do or not do prior to the
treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use at least 4
weeks prior to the treatment. If the desired treatment area also includes any
significant hair growth it should be shaved the day before the treatment. If
cosmetics have been applied to the treatment area, they will need to be removed
just prior to treatment. If the client is currently engaged in other skin
rejuvenation procedures (e.g. microdermabrasion), the client should wait at
least 3 days after such a procedure before scheduling a Pulsed Light treatment.
Is there anything I should do or not do following the
treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use. We further
recommend you use sunscreen following the treatment. The day after the treatment
the skin may be slightly sensitive and the client may want to avoid shaving or
doing anything that might irritate the skin, but this is a condition that exists
only in the 24 hour period immediately following treatment. Remember that
exposure to the sun only reverses the positive effects of the treatment.
Will I need follow up treatment?
Many clients are satisfied after the initial series of treatments (usually 4 or
5). However, some clients enjoy the improved quality of the skin (particularly
with facial treatments) and after the initial series of treatments they return
every 10 to 12 weeks to get a maintenance treatment that keeps the skin smoother
and better looking. Follow-up treatments are also necessary if the client
experiences excessive sun exposure without sunscreen because many of the
pigmentation abnormalities that were previously removed will return.
Can I combine photo-rejuvenation with Botox treatments?
Absolutely. Photo-rejuvenation addresses fine lines and overall skin texture.
Botox is usually administered to larger, more defined wrinkles.
Can I combine photo-rejuvenation with microdermabrasion or
chemical peel treatments?
Microdermabrasion and chemical peel treatments are good accompaniments to
photo-rejuvenation. Microdermabrasion is an ablative (it removes surface skin)
form of skin care. Photo-rejuvenation is non-ablative and addresses the
underlying dermal layer. However, microdermabrasion or chemical peels do not
address flushing or rosacea.

How does Pulsed Light acne treatment work?
The innovative Pulsed Light technology uses a specially filtered spectrum of intense light with wavelengths designed to kill the bacteria that causes acne. Other light energy is generated to reduce the inflammation associated with active acne in the treatment area.
How are Pulsed Light acne treatments different from other acne treatment procedures?
Pulsed Light treatments are characterized by speed and convenience. Other options like drugs (antibiotics) and cleansing agents have several deficiencies. Drug therapy has several undesirable side effects. Frequently, acne bacteria develops resistance to drugs and people suffer uncomfortable side effects ranging from gastrointestinal distress to dryness of the skin. Cleansing agents are only moderately effective at clearing acne because they only operate at the surface of the skin and cannot address much of the bacteria that exists under the skin. Pulsed Light has no side effects and goes through the upper layers of the skin with enough energy and heat to kill the bacteria that causes acne.
What does the treatment include?
The Pulsed Light hand-piece will be pressed lightly on the treatment area. Then the operator will press a button and an intense flash of light will be generated from the hand-piece. Each pulse covers an area of about 1/2" x 1.5". The technician will move the applicator across the skin flashing each part of the treatment area. In most cases, depending on the specific skin problem being addressed, the technician will go back over the treatment area a second time the same way.
What kind of results can I expect to see from a treatment?
In most cases the client will see acne start to improve after the first treatment. Mild redness of the skin within the treatment area may occur immediately after treatment, but this usually disappears within a few hours. Otherwise, there is minimal discomfort and no side effects. To achieve optimal results, several treatments are generally needed, with the exact number treatments varying from client to client and also depending on the severity of the acne. However, most clients find that after 8 treatments over a 4-week period 90% or more of the original acne problem will be gone.
Why does the client need to have several treatments?
Light energy is absorbed by cells under the skin's surface and, at the same time, it kills the bacteria that it can reach with sufficient energy. Depending on the severity of the acne, bacteria can exist well below the skin's surface and it can exist in very high concentrations. The Pulsed Light equipment does not generate enough energy to harm healthy tissue in the treatment area - only enough to kill bacteria. Using enough energy to ensure the destruction of ALL the bacteria would not be healthy for the surrounding tissue. In addition, highly concentrated bacteria existing in deep pockets under the skin is hard to reach with sufficient energy to kill all of it. So, this is a gradual process where some bacteria is killed, inflammation is reduced and as the skin starts to return to its normal state, remaining bacteria has to move closer to the surface. Subsequent treatments kill the remaining bacteria which is now more accessible and less concentrated.
What areas of the body can be treated?
Virtually any body area can be treated.
Who is a candidate for treatment?
The Pulsed Light skin rejuvenation system allows safe treatment of most skin types, but works best on skin types I - III (all but the very darkest skin). Generally, we will not treat people currently taking antibiotics, anyone that has recently had a similar procedure (e.g. microdermabrasion) within the last few days, anyone that's pregnant or anyone taking drugs that enhances photosensitivity.

The treated area may become slightly pink or red immediately after treatment. This may last a few hours. Otherwise there are no side effects and clients can continue with their daily routine immediately after treatment.
How often will I need to repeat the treatment series?
This depends on a number of factors starting with the severity of the acne that is being corrected. However, most clients achieve optimal results after 8 treatments (twice a week for 4 weeks). Once this initial series is completed, the client may want to return for treatment about every 60 days depending on his/her lifestyle, diet and other factors that may help control or incite the acne. On average, after the initial treatment, these follow-up treatments every 2 months are sufficient to keep the acne under control.
What are the advantages of the Pulsed Light acne treatment?
Besides the obvious changes to the client's appearance, Pulsed Light provides a fast, convenient and affordable way to treat acne without any side effects.
How many treatments will be needed?
The number of treatments required to obtain optimal results varies slightly with the severity of the acne. It also varies based on the skin type of each client. However, most clients see changes after the first treatment and most reach optimal results after 8 treatments.
Is there anything I should do or not do prior to the treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use at least 4 weeks prior to the treatment. If the desired treatment area also includes any significant hair growth it should be shaved the day before the treatment. If cosmetics have been applied to the treatment area, they will need to be removed just prior to treatment. If the client is currently engaged in other skin rejuvenation procedures (e.g. microdermabrasion), the client should wait at least 3 days after such a procedure before scheduling a Pulsed Light treatment.
Is there anything I should do or not do following the treatment?
It is always recommended to avoid sun exposure or tanning bed use. We further recommend you use sunscreen following the treatment. The day after the treatment the skin may be slightly sensitive and the client may want to avoid shaving or doing anything that might irritate the skin, but this is a condition that exists only in the 24 hour period immediately following treatment.
Will I need follow up treatment?
Many clients are satisfied after the initial series of treatments (usually 8). However, the factors, like oily skin, that initially created the acne are probably going to create acne in the future. To avoid this, many clients come back about every 60 days for a follow-up treatment which kills any bacteria that has started to develop since the initial series of treatments.
Can I combine Pulsed Light acne treatments with other acne treatments?
It is very important that the client terminate any antibiotic therapy before having Pulsed Light treatments for acne. Specifically, the client must not have taken Accutane 6 months prior to having the Pulsed Light treatments. corrective peel treatments may be continued with the Pulsed Light therapy, but neither should be performed less than 3 days before a Pulsed Light treatment or sooner than 2 days after a Pulsed Light treatment. Using cleansing agents is acceptable, but the client may want to avoid any cleansing agents with a significant acidic content during the 24-hour period immediately following a Pulsed Light treatment.
